Publicly Traded Real Estate Development Companies

Includes Real Estate Investment Companies (Non-REITs)

List of Publicly Traded Real Estate Development Companies Listed on Major U.S. Exchanges

This list of stocks is comprised of non-real estate investment trusts (REITs) that are engaged in real estate development and investment. Most of the real estate development companies on this list are small and mid-cap companies engaged in the acquisition, development, management and sale of various forms of real estate. While the real estate these companies are involved with varies from company to company, the most common theme is the development of land for commercial use.

The real estate investment companies in this category have a common business model as they acquire ownership of a property and then generate revenue primarily from one of two routes:

  • Leasing the property
  • Selling the property at some point in the future.

The properties they own can vary and include apartment buildings, billboards, cellular towers, medical offices, general office buildings, parking garages and a wide range of commercial property. Some companies, like Gyrodyne Company of America (GYRO), are very focused in a specific type of real estate property. Other companies have a diverse portfolio or residential and commercial properties.

It should be noted that most of the publicly traded real estate companies on U.S. exchanges are real estate investment trusts (REITs).
