Publicly Traded Railroads

Includes Publicly Traded Railways and Short-Line Railroads

List of Publicly Traded Railroads Listed on U.S. Exchanges

Most of the publicly traded railroad companies on this list are larger-sized railroads that move a wide range of freight. Examples of the freight these railways transport include agricultural products, automotive parts, chemicals, consumer products, coal, crude oil, forest products, industrial products, metals, minerals, plastics and vehicles. It is common for these companies to have in the range of 13,000 to 21,000 miles of track and offer services related to their primary rail freight business including freight forwarding, intermodal, trucking and warehousing.

The couple of exceptions to these broad generalizations include Guangshen Railway Company (GSH) which offers freight services but primarily focuses on passenger service in China. Providence and Worchester Railroad (PWX) is a regional railroad in the Northeast region of the United States and hence is smaller than the other major railroad companies on this list.
