List of Publicly Traded Diversified Mining Companies Listed on Major U.S. Exchanges

There are three distinct types of diversified mining companies on this list. The first type represents the largest mining companies in the world, BHP Billiton (BBL and BHP), Rio Tinto (RIO) and VALE (VALE). These mining giants employee tens of thousands of people are have properties in dozens of countries around the world. They are leading producers in multiple mining categories and represent a significant percentage of the overall commodities produced in the world. It should be noted that BHP Billiton Plc (United Kingdom) and BHP Billiton Limited (Australia) are the same company. The companies have separate legal entities but are managed and run by a single entity.

The second type of companies are mid-sized mining companies. These companies are still quite large and have significant operations. They are often one of the leaders in production in their areas of focus. While large, they simply do not have the massive scope to be categorized in the first category.

The final category of companies represents smaller-sized companies with diverse mining operations. In some cases these smaller companies will have multiple assets around the world with different projects producing different metals. In other cases, the company will have one or two projects with a significant amount of different metal deposits. They are diversified in what they produce but are much smaller in operations compared to the first two categories.
