List of ETFs Focusing on Taiwan Listed on U.S. Exchanges

There is a trio of ETFs focusing on the country of Taiwan listed on U.S. exchanges. These include a broad-based iShares ETF (EWT) that is based on an index designed to capture a large percentage of the total Taiwanese stock market and the First Trust ETF (FTW) and the SPDR ETF (QTWN) which both use fundamental factors in the selection of companies. Here are a couple of additional notes regarding these ETFs:

• The ETFs contain between approximately 40 (First Trust) and 100 (iShares and SPDR) companies.
• All of the ETFs are heavily weighted towards the information technology sector. When we have checked this percentage, it has been very common for all of the ETFs to have around 60 percent of the ETF weight comprised of technology companies. This is a natural extension of the makeup of the Taiwanese stock market as many of the largest public companies in Taiwan belong to this sector.
• Some of the companies that have been in these ETFs include Chunghwa Telecom Co., Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., MediaTek and the semiconductor giant, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.
