List of Japanese ETFs Listed on U.S. Exchanges
With over 20 ETFs, Japan has the second largest selection of country ETFs listed on U.S. exchanges (China is first). Here are a few notes on this wide-range of options:
- There are several broad-based ETFs focusing on Japanese stocks. These are focused on large and mid-cap companies and the number of stocks that the ETFs are comprised of varies between 100 and 440. The most traded Japanese ETF falls into this category which is the iShares MSCI Japan ETF (EWJ).
- While there are a few small-cap ETFs scattered amongst the broad-based ETFs, there are four separate ETFs specifically focusing on smaller Japanese companies. These ETFs are comprised of a large number of companies (between 600 and 800) and no single company represents a significant percentage of any of these ETFs.
- There are more Japanese hedged ETFs than any other country. These ETFs are designed to benefit from a strong US dollar in relation to the Japanese yen. In addition to the broad-based hedged ETFs, there are five hedged sector ETFs focusing on different sectors within the Japanese economy. These hedged sector ETFs are unique to Japan and provided by WisdomTree.
- There are also a handful of ETFs listed on this page that are weighted towards Japan (approximately 30% or more). Japanese companies are prevalent in these and numerous other ETFs in the Asia, Asia-Pacific and developed market/EAFE categories.
