Corporate Bond ETFs: Here are a few common highlights for this group of ETFs. Common traits include:
- These ETFs are primarily comprised of investment-grade corporate bonds.
- These bonds are primarily U.S. dollar-denominated bonds.
- Bonds issued by U.S. corporations make up most of the holdings. However, there are many ETFs that include foreign U.S. dollar-denominated bonds as well.
Floating Rate Bond ETFs: The interest payments on floating-rate debt securities adjust to reflect any changes in interest rates that occur. These ETFs focus on this type of security.
Government Bond ETFs: These ETFs are comprised of securities issued or guaranteed by the U.S. government including Agency Adjustable Rate Mortgages (ARMs), U.S. Agency bonds, Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS), Mortgage-Backed Securities (MBS) and U.S. Treasuries.
High-Yield Corporate Bond ETFs: These ETFs are primarily comprised of high-yield bonds issued by corporations. High-yield bonds are commonly referred to as junk bonds.
MBS ETFs: These ETFs are comprised of mortgage-backed securities (MBS). Most of the securities are issued and/or guaranteed by an agency of the United States government.
Mixed Bond ETFs: These bond ETFs are comprised of a diversified mix of different types of bonds spread across at least two different sectors of the fixed income market. This group is where you will find the total bond ETFs that are designed to represent the broad bond market.
Municipal Bond ETFs: This ETFs are primarily comprised of municipal bonds which are debt obligations issued by governmental entities which can include state, city and county governments.
Specialty ETFs: This section includes convertible bond ETFs and senior loan ETFs.
U.S. Treasury ETFs: There is a large selection of Treasury ETFs in this section. There are numerous broad, short, intermediate and long-term Treasury ETFs along with numerous specialty ETFs.
U.S. Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS) ETFs: These ETFs are comprised of TIPS which are inflation indexed bonds issued by the U.S. Treasury.
